Toe-to-hand transfer

Toe-to-hand transfer, also known as toe-to-thumb transfer or microsurgical toe transplantation, is a highly specialized reconstructive procedure designed to restore hand function and appearance in patients who have lost a finger or thumb due to trauma, congenital conditions, or illness. This intricate surgery involves transplanting a toe, usually the second toe, from the foot to the hand, where it is meticulously connected to the blood vessels, nerves, and bones of the hand. The goal of this surgery is to create a functional digit that closely mimics the original finger or thumb, allowing patients to regain critical abilities such as gripping, pinching, and holding objects..

The transferred toe can either act as a thumb or allow the thumb to have pinch grip. It has a nail, and joints which can bend and straighten, although not as much as finger joints. Dr. Sushil Nahar, an expert in reconstructive microsurgery, performs this procedure with precision, ensuring that the transplanted toe functions effectively in its new role. The surgery typically requires a multidisciplinary approach, involving detailed preoperative planning, advanced microsurgical techniques, and careful postoperative care to ensure optimal outcomes. The success of the procedure depends on factors such as the patient’s overall health, the condition of the recipient site, and the quality of the blood supply and nerves in both the hand and the toe.
