    What is Gynecomastia?

    Gynecomastia is a condition in which breasts are enlarged in men that can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity, or the use of certain drugs.

    Gynecomastia may be due to:

    • Excess  fat accumulation
    • Excess glandular tissue
    • Excess breast skin Sometimes
    • It can involve  one or both breasts

    Why do you need Gynecomastia surgery?

     Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impairs your self confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy due to embarrassment with this condition.

    What is done in gynecomastia correction?

     In gynecomastia surgery, by reducing breast size we can achieve flattening and enhanced  chest contours.

    In severe cases of gynecomastia, the excess breast tissue weight may cause breasts sagging and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically corrected and excess skin may be removed.

    Who are the ideal candidates for Gynecomastia surgery?

    • Healthy individuals in whom condition cannot be corrected by alternative medical management and breast development has stabilized
    •  Non-smokers and non-drug users
    • Men with realistic expectation about physical appearance and  positive outlook

    What is required for preoperative preparation for Rhinoplasty?

    • Routine blood test, Preanaesthesia check up
    • Stop smoking and medication which cause bleeding i.e. aspirin, herbal medicines.

    What are the risks in gynecomastia surgery?

    In healthy adult the risks due to surgery is remote but there are mandatory to explain surgical and anaesthesia risk.

    • Bleeding, Infection, numbness, bruises,Poor wound healing or scarring, seroma (fluid accumulation), Fatty tissue in breast might die (fat necrosis)
    • Breast asymmetry
    • Possibility of revision surgery
    • Few rarest complication like Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications and injury to deeper structure.

    What is postoperative protocol and how is recovery following surgery?

    A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect. Compression dressing is applied for immediate post operative period and pressure garment for early post operative period to optimize the result. Rest other medication like antibiotics and pain killer as advised.

    The final results of gynecomastia surgery are permanent in most cases. However, if it happened due to use of  medications, drugs (including steroids), or weight gain you must be fully free from these substances and keep at a stable weight  to maintain  results.

    When do you appreciate Gynecomastia surgery results?

    The final results of your gynecomastia surgery will appear over the next few months. Incision lines are permanent, but will continue to fade over time.

    What are the techniques of gynecomastia surgery?

    1. Liposuction technique: used primarily in cases where excess fatty tissue present in gynecomastia. By use of liposuction cannula excess fat, can be removed from the body by vacuum suction.

    2. Excision technique: used where glandular breast tissue or excess skin need to removed.

    3. Combination of liposuction & excision techniques: when there is excess fat and extra skin is there.
